When Tina and David asked me where I wanted to celebrate my birthday, I decided not to just go to my old favorites. Instead, I researched the current restaurant scene in Philadelphia. The results of my seeking? I couldn't seem to help myself, Susanna Foo's called out to be visited once again. It turned out that David couldn't get a reservation at the downtown restaurant. Susanna is closing her downtown restaurant and concentrating her energies on her Radnor location-- Susanna's Gourmet Kitchen. But he could get a reservation at the Gourmet Kitchen and good man that he is, he snapped up the opportunity.
This is a less formal place than downtown and, at first, I was a bit disappointed at not being able to have one last luxurious dining experience on Walnut Street. I should have saved my emotion because the food is every bit as good and we had a wonderful time here. We must have impressed our waitress with our ardor because at the end of the meal Susanna Foo herself appeared and chatted with us. I was practically drooling with admiration. (After all, I have been a long-time fan of her cooking.) She is warm and shyly friendly and seemed to appreciate our appreciation of her work. What else can I say? it was the perfect evening--good food, good friends and a first-hand sighting of one of my culinary heroines.
